Volunteer Opportunities for Health Care Providers

Getting Started:

1_icon.jpgUnderstand How You Can Help

Health care providers have the unique opportunity to provide support to immigrant patients, their families, and the community at large. Health care providers can create a welcoming space for immigrants in the clinical setting and can help patients address immigration-related health needs. They can link patients with immigration questions to reputable local and online community and legal resources. Health care providers can also identify and organize trainings on immigration resources and immigration policy in the U.S., both within their clinics and for colleagues at regional and national conferences. Outside the clinical setting, health care providers can partner with other immigrant-serving organizations to develop training and materials relevant to their patients, including family preparedness and safety planning. Finally, health care providers can serve as expert health care advisors to local, state, and national immigration advocacy groups.

Immigrant patients, especially those whose primary language is not English, may be reluctant to trust unfamiliar institutions, but see health care settings as a “safe space” in the community. Many immigrant patients may confide in their health care providers about their fears, questions, and concerns, and health care providers should understand how immigration status could impact their patients’ rights and options. Health care providers should also be aware of the privacy protections and other rights relevant to health care institutions and the patients and providers within them. U.S. immigration law is complex, and there is a lot of confusion about how it works. Immigration laws have many goals, including keeping families together, bringing skilled workers to the U.S., and protecting people from danger. Some laws allow people to stay for a limited time. Other laws allow people to qualify for permanent legal status. Learn more about immigration law and how the U.S. immigration system works.
