CARA Pro Bono Project


CARA operates a non-traditional pro bono model of legal services that directly represents the children and women incarcerated at the Dilley detention center. CARA volunteers appear in court, represent clients at credible fear interviews and bond proceedings, complete client intakes, conduct research, draft motions, and support children and women in harsh detention conditions. CARA provides orientation, training, and day to day guidance. 

Time and Place:

New volunteer teams arrive in Dilley, TX each Sunday. They attend orientation, and work the rest of the week through Friday.

Special Skills Needed:

  • Attorneys, law students and paralegals with experience in asylum work
  • Spanish speakers are preferred; interpreters needed for volunteers who do not speak spanish
  • Non-immigration attorneys who speak Spanish
  • Social workers, psychologists, forensic anthropologists, and individuals with strong research skills
